How to Develop a More Positive Body Image

The way we view our body has a big impact on how we feel about ourselves. The world tells us in order to have a positive body image we have to have a perfect body. That couldn’t be further from the truth. Having suffered from having a negative body image most my life I know how hard it can be to love our bodies here and now. However I have learned that a positive body image can be developed at any time with practice, patience, and some self love. We can find much needed healing in how we view ourselves. To have a positive body image we need to cultivate self love and acceptance which comes through practice.

Here are some suggestions to improve your view of your body:

Take time a few times a week and write down 2-3 things you like about your body.

Decide on concrete days and times to do this and set a reminder in your phone! Then just pull up a notes app, and keep a running list. That list will also be a great reference for times when you feel down about your body. Just go back and read all the wonderful things about your body that you love.

Think about the incredible functions of your body and feel gratitude for each body part.

For example, I am so grateful that my brain soaks up all the information I learn in my college classes. I’m also grateful for legs that allow me to run and lungs that work properly allowing me to breathe comfortably. Obviously there are many physical ailments that individuals struggle with and it may be hard to find gratitude. But even with illness and disability, there is usually some aspect of our body that is working properly and keeping us alive!

Figure out what your triggers are that make you feel like your body isn’t good enough and limit those things in your life.

It may be something as simple as unfollowing someone on Instagram or getting rid of a pair of jeans that don’t fit anymore. Remember that you deserve to be happy in your body the way it is now!

Find ways to move your body each day in a way you enjoy.

Exercise comes in many different forms! One of the ways I like to move my body each day is by going on walks with my family. It gives me the chance to move my body and also to catch up with my husband and the things he has going on in his life! I also have friends who have enjoyed trying new classes at the recreation center. If you have a gym or recreation center nearby, look at the classes they offer and maybe get a class pass to try out some new forms of exercise! You never know what you might enjoy. I know that when I move my body in any way, I always feel more grateful for it afterwards. Prioritize daily movement!

Our bodies are such a remarkable gift that we should each treasure and enjoy. Life is too short not to be happy and having a positive body image can bring a greater happiness into our lives. Do you have tips you would add to the list? Leave them in the comments below!
