Your Stories: Meeting the Parents

Welcome to our new series: Your Stories. 🎉 Each month, we will collect your stories on various topics and compile them into a blog post for all of us to laugh and learn together. All stories will always be kept anonymous.

This month’s topic is meeting the parents. And boy, do we have some funny stories to share. Let’s get started!

So I had only met his parents once, maybe twice before this…we went to his parents house, where he was living at the time to have dinner with his family. This part is hard to explain but before we ate, he and his mom were teasing each other and messing around and he squeezed her tight for a hug. And she let out a HUGE fart. 💨 I was just standing there completely in shock not knowing what to say or do. Shortly after that he went downstairs to change and left me upstairs alone with his parents for a few minutes. We are happily married now so obviously it worked out and we joke about it all the time!

We are both from California and had gone to visit. I had met his family once before and some of his extended family. After walking in his house, I excitedly greeted his sister. And very confidently exclaimed her name, BUT it was actually his cousins name. 😅

My sister served in my fiance’s ward before we even met! She told me I should go find him when we both got out to BYU (we were both incoming freshmen the same year), and then we happened to be in the same ward. Now his younger brother is serving in the mission where my parents live! My sister says that the first time she met my fiance, she was a missionary, and he was on his way to a high school football game wearing a blue morph suit. She never would have guessed that that teenager would one day be her brother in law!

I had only known my husband for one week when I met my then future-in-laws. The day we met they accidentally referred to me as their son’s wife. 🙊

In the first month of dating my husband, there was an afternoon where my father-in-law was taking a shower. Realizing all the towels were in the dryer, my mother-in-law (who was cooking dinner at the time) quickly asked me to run a towel up to “dad”. I definitely did not, but it took both of us a moment to pause and laugh at how silly that request was. This is normally a request that would be made to one of the sons. The request was comical because it totally revealed that my Mother-in-law had already made the decision in her mind that I was married to her son and that she thought I was that comfortable with the whole fam.

I was a senior in high school and a boy came to pick me up for a date. He stayed for a bit and met my parents and my Dad told him as he was leaving that he felt a spiritual prompting when they met that he was meeting his future son in law, and started tearing up. I was mortified. Luckily he was able to laugh it off and now he’s my husband!

These were so fun! Thanks so much to those who shared their stories. I hope that in future months, this post gets longer with all of your stories. Keep an eye out on Instagram for next month’s topic!
